How Often Should You Mow? A Season-by-Season Guide for Bay Area Lawns

Most lawns around Campbell, Cupertino, and the Peninsula are tall fescue or a fescue blend, a cool-season grass that grows fastest in the mild, damp months of spring and fall. That growth pattern, not the calendar, is what should set your mowing schedule.

The rule that matters most is the one-third rule: never cut off more than a third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Cutting more than that stresses the plant, exposes the soil, and gives weeds an opening. For tall fescue, a mowing height of around three inches works well most of the year.

In spring, when growth takes off, weekly mowing is usually the only way to stay within the one-third rule. In the heat of summer, raise the mower a little: longer blades shade the soil, hold moisture, and help the lawn get through dry stretches with less water.

Fall brings a second growth spurt, so weekly mowing often continues into October or November. Through winter, growth slows down and biweekly visits are usually enough.

That's why we build maintenance plans around the season rather than a fixed rule. Your visit day stays the same, but mowing height and frequency follow what the lawn actually needs.
